Greenhouse light pollution in the county\u2019s Leamington and Kingsville areas has been a concern of late. Complaints have even come from across the border in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.detroitnews.com\/story\/news\/local\/michigan\/2019\/11\/26\/far-reaching-greenhouse-lights-color-sky-leave-some-seeing-red\/4248414002\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Detroit<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, as citizens have raised concerns about \u201cpockets of glow\u201d in the night sky. Artificial nocturnal light can disturb human and animal sleep patterns and even disrupt airport operations. So, with the new year came new By-laws designed to limit light pollution in Essex County.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Leamington is considered the \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mmjdaily.com\/article\/9285974\/the-bylaw-could-be-a-win-win-for-everyone\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">greenhouse capital of North America,<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201d having the highest concentration of greenhouses in a single municipality. Policies and precedents set in this region can influence the entire North American greenhouse industry. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.leamington.ca\/en\/municipal-services\/resources\/79-20-Greenhouse-Light-Abatement---with-in-force-provisions.pdf\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Leamington\u2019s By-law<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> states that greenhouses that use lights must install curtains on walls and ceilings, \u201censuring no light escapes.\u201d It goes on to say that curtains must be closed from one hour before sunset until one hour after sunrise, but ceiling curtains can be 10% open between 2.a.m. and 6 a.m. This is for ventilation of excess heat and humidity which may damage plants. There are concerns that 10% gapping over a period of 4 hours may be too restrictive to properly vent a greenhouse. Ontario\u2019s Hydro One is actively boosting the power supply to bring an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/windsorstar.com\/news\/local-news\/hydro-one-will-boost-power-to-leamington-and-greenhouses-with-new-line\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">additional 1,000 megawatts<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> to the area. To do this, they are currently in the process of adding 600 megawatts to the grid. By 2025, they will be adding a new 230-kilovolt line that will carry an additional 400 megawatts of power from Chatham to Leamington. The challenge is to strike a balance between growing the nutritious and healing plants we need while being energy and light-efficient. Rebates per fixture can range from $200 to $350.
