HID lights, which include high-pressure sodium (HPS) and metal halide (MH), are high-intensity discharge lights. The use of LED lamps for indoor and greenhouse commercial growth is surrounded by many myths. Five of the most common (but easily busted) LED myths to involve key performance indicators that help growers determine their final grow light choices, including: \u00a0<\/p>\n<ol role=\"list\">\n<li>Cost\/ROI\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>LED lifespan\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Power consumption\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Heat\/running temperature\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Crop yield\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/energysaver\/save-electricity-and-fuel\/lighting-choices-save-you-money\/led-lighting\">US Department of Energy<\/a>\u00a0acknowledges that\u00a0\u201cLED\u00a0is a highly energy-efficient lighting technology\u00a0and has the potential to fundamentally change the future of lighting\u00a0\u2026.\u201d However, not all LED lighting technologies are created equally. There are underpowered\u00a0and\u00a0inferior low-cost LED lamps\u00a0on the market. Infrared photons are not utilized by plants in\u00a0photosynthesis\u00a0but they warm up plants and the environment. When using HPS and other traditional lights in a warm climate or simply installing many fixtures\u00a0in\u00a0an area, plants can\u00a0be\u00a0easily overheated,\u00a0causing you to need additional ventilation.\u00a0As discussed in Myth\u00a0#1 on costs and ROI, fans and air conditioning electricity consumption will add more energy demand to your grow facility.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>LEDs are not just a replacement for HPS lights.\u202fHPS and other HID lamps cannot be placed close to\u00a0the\u00a0plants without burning them. Although LED lights,\u00a0like\u00a0every electric device, produce heat, their\u00a0operating temperatures are much lower. They also do not emit heat radiation with their light. Therefore, they can be placed close to the plant canopy,\u00a0saving space and\u00a0reducing energy and infrastructure needs.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>LED\u00a0grow lights\u00a0are constructed to emit light as a beam directed down. Traditional grow lights emit light in all directions,\u00a0making them require hoods and reflectors to direct the light down to the plants. This equipment adds bulk and is not efficient in directing light to the plants,\u00a0indirectly increasing energy consumption.\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.heliospectra.com\/led-grow-lights\/\">High-quality LED grows lights<\/a>\u202fare equipped with secondary optics. As the light output of\u00a0LEDs seems to degrade mainly based on the temperature of the air around the\u00a0LED\u00a0dome, the problem with the current design of\u00a0LED\u00a0grows\u00a0lights\u00a0is the equipment needed to evacuate enough warm\/hot air from the light and the air exhausts. At this stage, the equipment needed to cool down a high output\u00a0LED is not efficient enough, and the few available are too\u202fexpensive.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>BUSTED<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Thermal management of\u00a0LEDs is a science in itself. The heat LEDs generate originates in the semiconductors due to slight inefficiencies resulting when electrical activity is not turned into light. But as\u00a0LED\u00a0grow lights\u00a0produce minimal heat, growers don&#8217;t need to spend a lot of time, energy,\u00a0or\u00a0expense dealing with excess heat when they can use small and reliable extractor systems for this purpose.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>What is the best approach to keeping light arrays cool while keeping costs low?\u00a0Water cooling is not 100%\u00a0efficient at transferring heat, at least not yet. Locating the power supply outside of the growing area may give a grower half of the heat savings that could be realized with a water-cooled system, but what is gained in lower cooling energy is lost in line losses of long electrical\u00a0cables.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Including fans (convection) to produce currents of cooling air is an effective way to manage heat issues, but fans introduce a moving part into the system. Moving parts typically break down long before\u202fLEDs fade. However, if you\u00a0must\u00a0purchase a unit with fans in it, make sure the\u202fLED\u202fgrow lights\u00a0have a long warranty and the fans are rated for a lifetime that exceeds that of the\u202fLEDs.\u00a0Even better,\u00a0MITRA\u00a0avoids fans altogether with simple but highly effective\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.heliospectra.com\/mitra-commercial-led-grow-lights\">passive cooling<\/a>\u00a0that\u00a0ensures that the light and your growing room always remain\u00a0at\u00a0an ideal and consistent temperature.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>No matter which lamps you choose,\u00a0you should always ask\u00a0the manufacturer\u00a0for a light plan.\u00a0Hanging grow lights in the right position and distance will allow your crops to utilize the photons to\u00a0their\u00a0full extent.\u202fLights do not have to be static.\u202fLED grow lights\u00a0enable a\u00a0high level of control over the light output, especially when used in conjunction with\u00a0smart systems like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/heliospectra.com\/heliocore\/\">helioCORE\u2122\u00a0<\/a>\u202fto control your lighting, adjust your light intensity and\u00a0alter your light\u00a0duration to the changing conditions in your grow facility.
